It’s mid January around 4:30 in the afternoon and the winter sun will soon set far to
the southwest. The snow on the field is deep – probably a foot or more, but it has
rained, then frozen, then snowed a little more leaving about two inches
of fresh powder on top of the packed base…..perfect conditions for a winter hike.
