Today, I’ll be setting up the remodeled shop with the new SawStop Table Saw face to face with the Powermatic, bridging the gap by joining the two saws together. To do this, I’ll add two filler pieces to the back rail of each saw. I’ll use plywood as the bridge support layer and MDF as the bridge surface top layer material. Using MDF as the top surface material allows me to replace the surface every few years at very little cost.

To make the bridge surface, I’ll start by using the circular saw to cut the plywood to length and finish with the table saw for the long rip. I can now drop the plywood in place and draw a few lines for the finish cuts. Next, I’ll use the plywood as a pattern for the MDF top layer. After rough cutting the MDF to size, I’ll use a flush cut router to make a perfect match and a roundover bit to soften the edge.

After the new surfaces are cut to fit, I’ll seal the top layer MDF with three coats of Mohawk Waterborne Pre Catalyzed Lacquer (sanding in between each coat) and assemble the pieces in place. When installing the top, I used business cards as shims for micro-adjusting the A quick test of the saw fences, sled and slides to ensure a flush surface on both saws.

This project is great for the new shop. Having two table saws is ideal in case one saw goes down for repairs, I always have a backup saw to use. It also adds a bit of functional table top work space. The shop isn’t that big so every little bit helps. Thanks for watching!
