In this woodworking project, I’ll guide you through the creation of a chic mid-century modern writing desk. Combining the simplicity of birch plywood construction with the elegance of quarter-sawn white oak veneer, this desk features solid white oak legs, shaped and tapered to achieve that clean, modern aesthetic.
Step 1: Preparing the Plywood
Start by cross-cutting a sheet of 3/4-inch birch plywood at 45 inches. Rip the top and bottom pieces at a rough width and then cut parts for the back, sides, and drawer divider at 3 1/2 inches.
Step 2: Assembling the Desk Box
Attach the back, sides, and drawer divider using screws, and wood glue. Ensure a flush and square fit. Rip the top and bottom at 21 and a half inches and attach with screws and wood glue.
Step 3: Adding Molding
Make molding to cover the front edge of the plywood using solid white oak. Rip and sand the molding, ensuring a perfect match with the plywood thickness.
Step 4: Creating Drawers
Make simple yet sturdy drawers using 3/4-inch birch plywood. Cut grooves for the drawer bottom and assemble using wood glue, nails, and screws.
Step 5: Shaping the Legs
Cut solid white oak legs at 2 and 3/8 inches and shape them using a band saw, sander, hand plane and router. Achieve a tapered look with a 7-degree angle at the top, adding a touch of elegance to the design.
Step 6: Applying Veneer
Cut and apply quarter-sawn white oak veneer using contact cement. Attach it to the sides and top of the desk, ensuring a seamless and matching pattern.
Step 7: Final Touches and Hardware
Finish the desk by sanding, and applying the chosen finish. Attach the legs 1 inch from the front and back, securing them with screws and concealing holes with walnut plugs. Install the drawer pulls using a jig for precision.
This mid-century modern writing desk combines functionality with a timeless design. With careful craftsmanship and attention to detail, you can create a stunning piece of furniture that will undoubtedly enhance any home.
