I use the Bernzomatic TS 8000 hand torch to create a burned wood finish on the frame I built for the magnetic chalkboard. The finish works great with simple 2x4s and the grain really pops with the torch finish and a few coats of shellac.
Remember to always to keep the torch moving and work in the direction of the wood grain
I make my own Shellac using shellac flakes and denatured alcohol. For this project, I used GarnetLac shellac flakes to get a darker finish.
