I bought this mid century modern desk and chair for $95 about 20 years ago. I refinished the desk but never got around to the chair until now. I’m a huge fan of mid century modern furniture so it’s pretty cool to have this set now in my office / art studio.

1. Start by taking the chair apart making sure not to lose any of the hardware.

2. Remove the old finish with Zip Strip paint and varnish remover. Apply the Zip Strip with a brush and remove the old finish with a Scotch-Brite pad.

3. Sand the chair in the direction of the grain with 150 grit sandpaper.

4. Apply the oil based stain with a brush let it sit for 10 minutes and wipe it off with a clean rag.

5. For this project I used clear lacquer for the finish. Spraying three coats and sanding in between coats with 320 sandpaper

6. Starting in the center and working towards the corners I upholstered the seat using quarter inch staples in a pneumatic staple gun.

7. The finished chair in my art studio.
