Today I’m building an organizational shelf for my screws. This project doesn’t take a lot of material and really helps keep my workbench clear of random screws and screw buckets. I’m a big fan of the Power Pro plastic screw buckets so this new cabinet will be made to fit 4 rows of 6 screw buckets. I’m slowly buying new screws in these buckets instead of the boxes.
How to Build A Screw Organization Cabinet: Let’s Get Started
For the sides, I’m using 3/4″ birch plywood and I’ll start by ripping my side pieces to 4-3/16″. Then I’ll cut a rabbit into the sides to accept the back of the cabinet.
With the sides cut and prepped, I’ll move on the shelves. I’m using Baltic Birch plywood recycled from a cabinet in the shop. I’ll rip my shelves to 4″ and cut the shelves to length at 25-1/2″.
I’ll use a piece of scrap plywood from the shelves to use as a measuring guide for attaching the shelves to the sides. I’ll mark one side and transfer the lines to the other side. Then, I’ll drill a pilot hole into one of the sides, what will be the inside of the cabinet and countersink the holes from the outside of the cabinet.
I use the pin nailer to tack the shelves into place before pre drilling into the shelves and connect them using 1-1/4″ screws. Do one side of the cabinet and spin it around to complete the other side.
I’ll band the edges of the cabinet and shelves using white oak left over from another project. Using a little glue and making sure I’m flush at the sides, I’ll attach the banding to the sides first using a pin nailer and then attach the banding to the shelves.
With the cabinet sides and shelves assembled, I’ll flip it over and take a measurement for the back. I’ll rip the backing and test the fit but before attaching the back, I’ll spray a quick finish coat onto the cabinet and shelves.
Thanks for watching guys! See you next time!
