I gave myself a bit of a design challenge in this woodworking project: How to make a side table with just one 2 x 8 x 10 board. Part of the thought process here is to see if I like the design of the finished end table before committing to a more expensive species of wood.
As it turns out, I’m really happy with end result, but would make a few small design modifications to add a bit more thickness to the finished table if I were to build it again.
First off, I would probably use either White Oak or Cherry Wood. And instead of the wood being an 1 1/2″ thick, I would use eight-quarter inch which is closer to 1 3/4″ thick. The added 1/4″ of thickness would add a little more depth to the carving I did with the Arbortech Turbo Plane and would give the piece a more sculptural feel.
As always, thanks for watching and I hope this project inspired you to get out into the shop.
