Wood Weathers… And That’s Okay

Nothing lasts forever outdoors—especially wood. When building outdoor projects, choosing the right material can extend their life, but eventually, sun, rain, and time will leave their mark. I’ve learned to appreciate the naturally weathered look that comes with it. For these planters, built in the spring of 2022, I chose Red Grandis—a wood I had never worked with before. It was recommended as a good outdoor option, was affordable, and was easy to work with, although a little prone to splitting.

The simple design features pocket holes, glued and screwed joints, and plastic inserts to help protect the wood from moisture. I finished them with Danish oil, which looked great at first, but like most outdoor finishes, it eventually faded. Almost five years later, the planters have developed a beautiful gray patina and fit perfectly in the garden.

If I get a few more years out of them, I’ll be happy. When they finally give out, I’ll reuse the inserts and build them again. Outdoor wood doesn’t stay new forever—and that’s part of what makes it beautiful. Check out the project video and plans here. Thanks for stopping by!
