Replacing the Bottom Screen
Some Top Bar Hives have a screened bottom for ventilation, mite control, and debris management. Over time, the screen may wear out or become clogged with debris. Replacing it ensures continued ventilation and pest control.
Steps to Replace the Bottom Screen:
- Choose the right material: Use hardware cloth (typically 1/8" or 1/16" mesh) to prevent pests while allowing airflow.
- Remove the hive from its stand: If possible, gently move the hive to access the bottom.
- Unscrew or detach the old screen: If it's stapled, use pliers to carefully pull it off.
- Clean out debris: Before installing a new screen, scrape out wax, propolis, or mite debris.
- Attach the new screen: Secure it with staples or small screws, ensuring it’s taut and sealed to the edges.
- Return the hive to its stand and monitor bee behavior.
