Sometimes “Hang the Flag” Isn’t Just Hanging the Flag

Happy Fourth of July! American flag on my newly restored signpost.

If you’re like me, when your wife, husband, partner, or whoever the “fixer” is in your household is asked to do something as simple as “Can you hang a flag on the signpost?” the answer is usually, “Sure!”

But in your mind, you’re already running through a long list of everything that really needs to happen before that flag ever goes up.

In this case, both the signpost and the address sign needed a little attention.

Washing the signpost with a 50/50 bleach-and-water solution and a little dish soap.

I started by mixing up a simple cleaning solution: 50% bleach, 50% water, and a small squirt of dish soap. After rinsing the post with clean water, I used a paintbrush to work the cleaning solution into all the nooks and crannies before giving it a good scrub. Then I rinsed everything thoroughly.

Washing the address sign with the same solution.

I repeated the same process on the address sign.

Applying a fresh coat of paint to the signpost.

Once everything was completely dry, I gave the post a fresh coat of paint and applied several new coats of spar varnish to the mahogany sign to bring back its rich finish.

Reattaching the numbers after applying a few fresh coats of spar varnish.

After the paint and varnish had plenty of time to cure, I reinstalled the bronze address numbers and mounted the sign back onto the post.

Attach the flagpole bracket to the top of the post.

With the sign and post looking just about as good as the day I built them, I was finally ready to do the original job, hang the flag.

I installed the flag bracket near the top of the post, slipped the flag into place, and stood back to admire the finished project.

Finally hanging the new flag on the newly restored signpost.

It made me laugh a little because that’s just how people who build and fix things tend to think. What starts out as a five-minute task often turns into a small restoration project. But if you’re wired the same way I am, there’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing the job was done right.

As we celebrate Independence Day, I hope you and your family have a safe, relaxing, and enjoyable Fourth of July weekend.

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you in the next one!
