Mid-Century Modern Walnut Sideboard: A Skill-Building Showcase
This mid-century modern–inspired walnut sideboard is a perfect blend of form and function. As with many cabinet builds, this project begins with the box. After cutting all parts from three-quarter-inch birch plywood, the carcass is assembled using screws for strength and efficiency. To conceal the exposed plywood edges, solid walnut edge banding is applied, creating a seamless and polished appearance.
With the main structure complete, attention turns to the drawer runners. These are constructed as simple frame assemblies using pocket hole joinery, providing sturdy and reliable support for the drawers. Once installed, they create a solid foundation for the next phase: drawer construction.
The drawers themselves are built with durability in mind. Instead of the more common quarter-inch material, half-inch plywood is used for the drawer bottoms. This small but impactful choice results in drawers that feel noticeably stronger and more substantial in everyday use.
Veneer work is where the piece truly begins to shine. Careful attention is given to grain direction, ensuring a continuous “waterfall” effect across the cabinet. Each section—left side, top, and right side—is labeled and applied in sequence so the grain flows uninterrupted. This same level of precision carries over to the drawer fronts, where the veneer is aligned to maintain a cohesive visual rhythm across the entire face of the piece.
The base plays a defining role in the overall design. Featuring a cantilevered structure supported by two central legs, it introduces a sense of movement and lightness. The arms of the base extend slightly beyond the cabinet length and are shaped with a gentle curve, first cut on the bandsaw and then refined using a hand plane. This process softens the edges and adds a handcrafted quality that contrasts beautifully with the clean geometry of the cabinet.
After final shaping and sanding, the piece is ready for finishing. The combination of richly figured walnut veneer and the sculpted base creates an elegant and balanced design—one that feels both modern and timeless.
