$25 and Two Power Tools Can Build This Bench

Here’s a fun weekend project that proves you don’t need a big budget or a full workshop to build something solid and long-lasting.

Back in March 2022, I built this bench using simple materials and just two power tools. At the time, I got plenty of comments saying it wouldn’t last a year outdoors.

Well, here we are four years later, and it’s still going strong.

This bench has been sitting on the deck of my son’s house down at the Jersey Shore, exposed to everything: rain, wind, blazing sun, and snow. It’s weathered, sure, but that just adds character. Structurally, it’s as solid as the day it was built.

Why It Works

The key to longevity here is simple: airflow.

As long as air can move around the lumber and allow it to dry out between wet conditions, even standard Douglas fir can hold up for years outdoors. Moisture is what destroys wood, not the weather itself.

A Couple of Tips for Ground Placement

If you’re planning to put your bench directly on the ground, take a few extra steps to extend its life:

  • Add nylon feet or domes to the bottom of the legs
  • Set the legs on pavers or stones
  • Keep the wood from sitting directly in damp soil

These small upgrades help prevent the wood from wicking up moisture, which is the fastest way to shorten its lifespan.

Build Your Own

If you’d like to make one for your home, I’ve put together free plans along with a full project video that walks you through the process step by step.

Give it a shot this weekend, you might be surprised how far $25 and a couple of tools can take you.

Enjoy the build, and I’ll see you in the next one.
